Governor Neil Ambercrombie and the Department of Education announced a pilot project that will keep intermediate student athletes engaged in sports and their academics. This intermediate athletics project is a part of the After School All Stars Program which will include sports such as basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer.

The students will have to keep up with their academics in order to participate and follow the OIA (Oahu Interscholastic Association) rules. The program will also include field trips and guest athlete speakers. Nanakuli Intermediate Head Football Coach Keala Watson says "This is really exciting for these kids to get an extra two years of school and football, it's exciting..."
