"For Kids, By Kids" Healthy Snack Contest Review in the Hawaii Midweek
Tanya Joaquin's article in the Midweek called "Cooking Up 5210 Fun At The Hyatt" highlighted the winners of the healthy snack contest Mattilda Colvin, Ipo Kea and Ka'ua Cariaga.
As a result of taking her own personal steps to create healthy snacks for kids after Halloween, Joaquin was invited to become a judge for the recipe contest at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort.
Executive chef Sven Ull-rich says, "The idea behind the contest is to engage our young generation of chefs to explore their kitchens and minds and come up with something that will provide them with energy as well as be satisfying to their own health."
Mattilda Colvin of Mid-Pacific Instutitute won the Elementary Grade Category for her recipe Grown-Here Green Taro Smoothie "Ice Cream". She says, "We used taro and coconut milk to be creamy, frozen fruit and taro for cold, honey because it's sweet and we want to help the bees, and kale because it's good for you."
