Benjamin, MD break down the differences between sports drinks and energy drinks and why they may not be right for your keiki.
- Sports drinks provide carbohydrates and electrolytes that should only be consumed when used during or after "prolonged, vigorous activity."
- Energy drinks provide carbohydrates as well as unhealhty stimulants (such as caffeine, guarana, etc.) which are not appropriate for children and adolescents. Through balanced nutrition, your keiki are provided with the body's proper fuel sources.
- Water is the best source of hydration. "...daily electrolyte requirements are met sufficiently by a healthy balanced diet; therefore, sports drinks offer little to no advantage over plain water."
- Avoid choosing drinks with excessive sugar and calories to prevent dental erosion and obesity.
